Having moved to Naples with his family, he grew up in an artistic climate with a propensity for the visionary construction of scenes in accordance with models developed by a group of Flemish, German and French painters working in Rome and Naples. After returning to Rome around 1614, he became one of the artistic protégés of Cardinal Del Monte. In 1617 he moved to Florence, where he held the post of court painter to the Medici family and was highly esteemed for his original works with their wealth of dramatic, nocturnal scenes.
